How companies talk about themselves on their corporate websites has improved substantially, according to the latest Investis IQ Rankings, released today. The IQ Rankings benchmark corporate websites and companies’ use of digital media, scoring them out of 100 for aspects including usability, corporate governance, CSR, investor relations (IR), use of mobile and use of social media.

The average About Us score globally has increased by 7% on six months ago, and all indices scored recorded an overall average improvement here, with the exception of the Portuguese PSI 20. This development has largely been driven by the greater use of a corporate video to give a top-level view of the company and by the introduction of interactive maps showing operations or key locations.

However, with the exception of the Dow Jones, all the American indices fall below the global average in this area. American companies have improved in the last six months but they are particularly bad at describing their business strategy or explaining their market environment.

Responding to the findings, Marcus Fergusson, Research Director at Investis, said:

“Only 16% of US companies discuss their strategy on their corporate websites compared to 65% of non-US companies. This is a serious shortcoming and will hamper attempts by investors and other key stakeholders to understand what will drive the business forward.

It is encouraging that greater use is being made of multimedia, which is a powerful way to communicate complex data. However, too many companies, including those outside of the States, are still failing to deliver critical and basic profile information.
